When Crying is Funny

Tim Tebow's Losing Reaction

Contempt for Tim Tebow has to be understood by Gator fans. The nation was force fed shovel sized loads of the Gator ever since he threw his first jump pass for a touchdown four seasons ago. Since that time, the gel headed quarterback’s name has been permanently burned into my TV screen thanks to ESPN’s pilot fish coverage. I’m guilty of rooting against teams I hate. Rarely, have I rooted against individual players, but I rooted against Tim Tebow. A lot. It’s not my fault or anyone else who grew more tired and more disgusted with every image, mention, cameo, or clip of Tebow. We had to either accept that Tebow was deeply intertwined with any and all college football media coverage or find another hobby. I couldn’t watch Thursday Night football without Lou mentioning Notre Dame, Mark mentioning Pitt, or Tim Tebow’s name being forced uncomfortably into any random segment.

Tim never seemed to be annoyed by all the coverage, in fact he ate it up. He took every opportunity to school the public on his deep faith. Accepting awards, hell even awarding awards where he was met with beau coup photo sessions and video clips. Like all major sports figures do for their sport, Tim became the center of attention for college football. Yet, when his emotions got the best of him, Gator fans decided Tim was to be given respect and peace of mind, and that he is to be taken seriously.

The bottom line is if he wants to be taken seriously, then he can’t rock red field paint on his face for the cameras while strutting around the sideline, especially when ten Gator assistants were waiting with towels to wipe him clean. Nor can he bellow in front of the media claiming to accept all the responsibility for a loss. There’s no ‘I’ in team, Tim, that goes for wins and losses. I didn’t see only Tim on the field trying to score touchdowns, although it seemed that was the case anytime Florida was first and goal from the two yard line. If anyone has the right to cry it should be the Florida running backs that would normally get in the end zone in those situations in most other schemes.

It would be wrong to downplay Tebow’s wild success, no doubt. His career totals include over 8,800 passing yards with 85 aerial touchdowns and over 2,800 rushing yards with 56 ground touchdowns. Tebow deserved the Heisman when he was a sophomore, and he got it. However, only his gigantic personality (both natural and created) earned him a seat at the Heisman Award Ceremony. He shouldn’t have even been in New York following this season unless he was talking to Tom Coughlin about playing TE in the NFL.

Either turn the tears off and act like a man or prepare to be dragged through the dirt by all the villains that waited so long for Florida’s ‘superman’ to stumble, a feat deemed impossible by ESPN since 2006. And look on the bright side, Tim; your not the poor villager that has to wake up to a monster sized American that can run the 40 in 4.5 trying to circumcise you. For what it’s worth Tim’s first lesson in NFL 101 was successfully passed when Tim provided entertainment for guys like me after the Alabama loss.
